Termite damage is silent

And out of sight. Most homeowners do not know how to detect termites because their activity is usually behind wall coverings, in crawl spaces, under foundations, in still plates, and many other inconspicuous areas of a home.

Termites infest over 5 million homes, creating more hidden damage costs to our homes than earthquakes, tornadoes and fires.

Termites inflict over $5 billion in damages every single year!

Most homeowners carry insurance for flood, fire, tornadoes and other natural disasters, and big companies will insure a home for these disasters but not for termites. You may ask yourself why? The simplest answer is risk management. If insurance companies knew how to manage termite risk, they might consider it. Connor’s can help you protect your home from termites. Inspection is free - give us a call.

Termites: 24-hour action

Termites are active twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. They are continuously moving through their underground tunnels, foraging for food. Their transportation system has no borders; it runs from home to home. Once they find a good spot, they share their location with others by means of a sophisticated communication system: pheromones.

Food, water and shelter, the mainstays for a colony, are provided by homes. The termite’s main food source is cellulous material found in wood, paper, drywall, and other items used to build homes (these cellulous sources also contain the moisture termites need to survive). They work tenaciously providing for their colony.

Signs of Termite Infestation

Common signs of termite infestation include:

  • The presence of mud tubes on foundations, walls and other structure parts.
  • Evidence of winged "swarmer" termites, or their shed wings. (Check along the edges of floors and on windowsills, where these signs are often found).
  • Damaged wood, hollowed out along the grain, often lined with mud.

Termite Prevention

There are specific actions you can take to assist in termite prevention:

  • Avoid water accumulation near the foundation of your home. For example, be sure your downspouts, gutters, and splash blocks are effectively diverting moisture from the foundation.
  • Reduce humidity in crawl spaces with vapor barriers and vents.
  • Never bury wood scraps or waste lumber in the yard.
  • Most importantly, eliminate wood contact with the soil. Maintain an 8-inch gap between the soil and wood portions of the building.
