Wildlife Control and Your Home
Tuesday, 18th October 2011
The National Pest Management Association recently released a statement regarding the necessity of managing the wildlife around one’s home. Wildlife, when entering a house, can pose a major health threat to those who live inside.
According to Missy Henrikson, Vice President of Public Affairs for the NPMA, “Most homeowners don’t typically view wildlife in terms of traditional pest control, but they should.” Animals may be cute at a distance, but the various species which live around one’s home can carry a wide variety of different diseases. Birds, for example, are known carriers for Lyme disease—the same illness which the deer tick is notorious for carrying.
The NPMA and Connor’s recommend the following precautions to deter wildlife:
- Seal your trash cans. Most wildlife venture into homes because of food in trash cans. By sealing your trash tightly, you can keep them out of your home.
- Consider fencing in your property. The physical obstruction of a fence is often all the deterrent an animal needs to stay away from your home.
- Cap your chimney. Birds often fly in through the opening at the top of your chimney. Blocking this entry point is a great way to prevent them from entering your home.
If you do encounter a wild animal in your home or on your property, the NPMA and Connor’s urge you not to attempt to remove it yourself. Call a professional wildlife management or pest control expert to handle the task of removing the animal to prevent scratches, bites, and the spread of disease.
