Why People Don’t Realize they have a Bed Bug Infestation

Tuesday, 20th July 2010

Bed bugs are creeping up in homes and retail establishments around the United States. However, many people do not realize they have bed bugs. According to the Express & Star, this is due to the habits and biology of bed bugs.

First, bed bugs tend to come out at night when people are sleeping. Because of that, few people realize they have the pests. They wake up with itchy bites and assume they came from other pests. What they do not realize is bed bugs were feeding on them at night.

In addition, bed bugs inject an anesthetic into people’s skin before they begin the feeding process. The anesthetic numbs the area, and keeps people from feeling the pinch of the bed bug bite. However, once the anesthetic wears off, people can feel some discomfort.

Since bed bugs are hard to catch in the act, it is important for people to look for other signs of bed bug infestations. If they have unexplained bumps on their skin or see any other signs of bed bugs, they should contact a pest control professional.
