Water and Cockroaches

Friday, 26th February 2010

Cockroaches cause a variety of problems for people, including allergies, asthma and bronchial disorders. Because of that, people should work to prevent cockroaches from entering the home. The University of Florida IFAS Extension states that people should remove moisture from their home in order to prevent infestations.

Cockroaches cannot survive without water. German cockroaches, which are most prevalent in the United States, live less than two weeks when they don’t have free access to water.

Because of that, people should tighten loose pipes, drain water left in the sink or bathtub and empty all cups or glasses. The area around the refrigerator should be wiped free of condensation and pet dishes should be emptied at night. People must also be careful when they water plants. If a plant is overwatered, cockroaches can drink from it.

Homeowners are encouraged to go around their homes and look for signs of moisture. The best method of pest control is prevention. People should work to prevent these bugs from coming into their homes.
