Understanding Mosquitoes

Tuesday, 15th June 2010

Mosquito season is in full swing, which means people are analyzing the pests’ habits and trying to understand why some people get lots of mosquito bites, while other people are basically untouched. According to the New York Times, there is a science behind mosquito bites. By understanding the science, you will know if you are at a higher risk than others.

First, larger people are more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes. This is likely because larger people typically have higher body temperatures and emit more carbon dioxide. Since larger people are more prone to mosquito bites, men and pregnant women have more issues than women who are not pregnant and are physically fit.

Lactic acid also attracts mosquitoes. Thus, you are more likely to end up with mosquito bites if you are sweating than you would if you were dry. Thus, be sure to towel off when you are outside to keep the mosquitoes at bay.

When you understand why mosquitoes bite, you can take preventative pest control measures to keep them away. That way, you can stay safe during the warm months.
