For instance, the American cockroach can contaminate food with Salmonella, and the German cockroach can give people staph infections, strep throat and hepatitis. In addition, cockroaches are responsible for increasing the amount of allergens in the home, which can lead to problems like asthma.

Because cockroaches are so dangerous, homeowners need to protect themselves and their homes from these pests. They should clean up clutter, seal up cracks and put food in airtight containers. It is also important to keep the garbage can covered and the home free of crumbs.

Lastly, people need to take immediate action if they see cockroaches in their homes. While they could try to fight the pests with over the counter sprays, the Sacramento Press says this is a waste of time and money. Instead, the Sacramento Press recommends that people contact a pest control professional.
