Termite Feeding Habits
Wednesday, 31st March 2010
It is a myth that termites only feed on wood. The NC State University Department of Entomology states termites feed on many different objects. While wood damage is the most devastating, homeowners should still be aware of the other possibilities.
According to the university, termites will feed on almost anything that contains cellulose. Cellulose is the main component in wood, and thus is very appetizing to termites. Since there are many household items that contain cellulose, there are many opportunities for termites to have a snack.
Some popular items with cellulose are wood paneling, paper, cardboard, art canvases, carpeting and sheet rock.
Homeowners can inspect these objects to check for signs of termites. If they find any damage, they can call a pest control professional to come to their home and check for termites.
If termites are found, the professional will be able to treat the home and eliminate the pests. Then, the home will be protected from termite damage.
