Protection from Hantavirus

Wednesday, 22nd December 2010

Hantavirus is a dangerous virus that is spread from rodents to humans.  The Department of Environmental Health has outlined some tips people should follow in order to protect themselves from this virus.

First, people need to keep rodents out of their homes. In order to do this, they need to check their homes for openings. They should check the foundation, windows and doors.  If they find an opening, they should seal it immediately.

If rodents still make it inside of the home, it is essential that people eliminate them immediately.  They can do this through trapping, or by contacting a pest control professional.

Then, the area must be properly cleaned.  Before cleaning, people must ventilate the infested area.  They should mix a solution of water and 10% bleach and clean the rodents’ nests and surrounding areas.  The bleach mixture should soak on the infested areas for fifteen minutes before it is wiped up.

After cleanup, people must wash their hands and clothes properly.  This will kill the viruses and bacteria that they came in contact with during the cleanup process.

Rodent infestations can be deadly, so it is important that people follow these tips.  Otherwise, they could end up with Hantavirus or another serious disease.
