Protect Your Pets

Tuesday, 29th June 2010

According to the Pest Management Association, pet owners need to take steps to protect their pets from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. These pests come out in the warm spring and summer months, and they attack pets.

Animals can get heartworms from mosquito bites. Heartworms can be fatal if they are not treated promptly.

Ticks cause Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and “tick paralysis.” These diseases are fatal in some circumstances.

Lastly, fleas can cause anemia and dermatitis. In addition, they can pass tapeworms onto pets.

Pet owners need to take special care to protect their pets from these diseases. They should clean bedding regularly, and avoid walking their animals in tall grass. They should also watch for signs of fleas, such as excessive scratching and licking.

If pet owners notice their animals are acting strangely, they should take them to the vet immediately. In addition, pet owners should monitor their homes and yards and make sure they do not have fleas, ticks or mosquitoes.
