Preventing a Bed Bug Infestation
Wednesday, 2nd June 2010
As bed bugs continue to pop up in homes around the United States, people are wondering what they can do to avoid an infestation. The EPA has several tips people can follow so they will be less likely to get bed bugs.
According to the EPA, people need to be careful when they get second hand furniture. If the furniture has bed bugs, the people will bring the bugs into their homes when they unload the furniture. Thus, they should inspect furniture before loading it up and taking it home.
Next, homeowners can put a protective cover on their mattresses and box springs. Bed bugs like to hide in small crevices, and the protective cover will eliminate a lot of the hiding spots they use. Thus, people will be less likely to have an infestation.
Lastly, people need to wash their clothes immediately when they return from a trip. They need to walk into the laundry room upon arrival and place all of their clothing in the washing machine. In addition to the clothing in their suitcases, they should also take off the clothing they are wearing and wash it as well. This can save them from dealing with an infestation.
Bed bugs are on the rise, but that does not mean people have to welcome them into their homes. They are less likely to have to deal with the bugs if they follow these few tips. If, however, the bugs still enter the home, people can contact a pest control professional to remove the pests.
