Preventative Pest Control

Monday, 18th January 2010

Pests come into homes during the cold winter months for refuge. Homeowners can eliminate this problem by pest proofing the inside and outside of their homes.

According to the University of Kentucky Department of Entomology, there are several steps homeowners should take. First, they need to install door sweeps. They must also seal utility openings and caulk cracks around windows. In addition, homeowners can pest proof the home by repairing gaps and tears in the screens for windows and doors. Crawl spaces should also be sealed off to prevent insect and rodent entrance.

Dawn H. Gouge, an Assistant Specialist in Entomology at the University of Arizona, along with other researchers on her team, noted the importance of also pest proofing the outside of the home. Gouge’s research showed the need to clean the yard, use pest resistant trash receptacles and encourage birds to stay close to the home.

Pest control and prevention are essential during the cold winter months. Homeowners must prepare their homes so they can keep pests outside, away from their residence.
