Prevent Carpenter Ant Infestations
Thursday, 25th March 2010
Carpenter ants are often mistaken for termites. While they do not eat wood, they do create tunnels in wood, and thus can do damage similar to a termite. According to the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Department, there are several steps homeowners can take to prevent a carpenter ant infestation.
First, homeowners should trim tree branches and shrubs that are located close to the home or other structures. People should also make sure they don’t use too much mulch, as carpenter ants build nests in mulch.
Entry points should be sealed and damp areas should be well ventilated in order to decrease moisture.
In addition, homeowners should remove food sources, and also replace decayed or damaged wood. After the damaged wood is removed, they should take steps to prevent future wood damage.
If people still get an infestation, they need to use the appropriate pest control methods immediately. Carpenter ants can cause a great deal of damage, and thus the issue must be addressed swiftly.
