Outbuildings and Rodents
Thursday, 18th February 2010
Rodent infestations in outbuildings such as cabins, barns and sheds are relatively common. Those who have infestations in their outbuildings must follow the proper cleaning guidelines to ensure their safety.
According to the CDC, the first step in dealing with an infestation in an outbuilding is opening the doors and windows. Owners should give the outbuilding 30 minutes to air out before entering.
After the building airs out, the owner can enter. Before cleaning, the owner should put on a pair of gloves. Then, he can begin the cleaning process.
First, he should pick up rodent droppings, nests and dead rodents. Then, the area should be cleaned with a mixture of bleach and water.
Next, the owner needs to mop the floors. If the floors are made of dirt, they should be sprayed with a mixture of bleach and water.
Countertops, cabinets and drawers should be cleaned as well. Everything must be disinfected to prevent the spread of disease.
After the building is clean, the owner should take the necessary steps to prevent a future infestation. The pest control needs should be assessed and then a plan should be implemented.
