Ladybug Infestations on the Rise
Monday, 11th January 2010
Large numbers of ladybugs have recently been spotted around the United States. According to Jessica Damiano of Newsday.com, this is because ladybugs hibernate during the wintertime and prefer to do so inside. They pick homes that are not adequately sealed and rest there for as long as the owners will allow.
While many people think ladybugs are harmless, Kusum Sharma, MD of the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Kentucky points out that as many as 50% of people in certain locations complain of allergies associated with ladybugs.
In another study that corroborates Dr. Sharma’s findings, David W. Goetz, MD, an allergy specialist in Morgantown, W. VA discovered ladybug allergies are as common as allergies to cockroaches and cats.
Homeowners are urged to take proper precautions, such as sealing their homes, to prevent infestation. As with other pest control situations, a sealed home prevents insects and other pests from entering the house, and thus protects homeowners from the problems associated with infestation.
