Before you lock up your house and go out of town, you need to make sure your home is pest proof. Pests can make themselves at home while you are away, so it is important to take certain precautions. According to In & Out Magazine, there are several steps you can take to protect your home.

First, you need to clean up any food. Get rid of your perishables and clean the oven, microwave and toaster oven. Even a few crumbs can attract pests, so be as thorough as possible.

Take out your trash as well. If pests cannot find food around the kitchen, they might start digging in the trash.

Lastly, don’t suspend cancel your pest control just because you’re out of town. If you are out for an extended period, In & Out recommends you still keep your regular pest control schedule. That way, pests won’t be able to settle in while you’re out.
