Dust Mite Control
Thursday, 7th January 2010
Dust mites live in all homes and trigger allergies. Experts agree that dust mite prevention is not possible, but containment is. Containment is the process of minimizing dust bites in the home and involves several steps.
Julie McNairn, MD, an allergist/immunologist notes dust mites are often the cause of winter allergies, and thus, containment is important.
In order to contain dust mites, Every Day health states homeowners must go through a routine. The routine includes reducing relative humidity to below 50 percent via a humidifier, replace carpeting with hard surfaces, washing bedding regularly and minimizing the number of soft objects in the home.
According to Discovery Healthy, homeowners should also keep furnishings to a minimum and vacuum regularly. In addition, fans should not be used when people are sleeping, as fans stir up dust.
Dust mite prevention is a form of pest prevention homeowners can do on their own. While it takes work on the homeowners’ part, they can contain dust mites all year long.
