New York lawmakers and various homeowners’ insurance companies are beginning to recognize the bed bug population resurgence in the United States. Lawmakers in the state are now pushing to make it mandatory for insurance companies to cover bed bugs in their plans. This new development comes alongside the increasing problems hotel owners are having in keeping bed bugs out of their rooms.

Until recently, infestation eradication of any kind has been considered a maintenance expense by insurance companies, meaning that they were not covered by their plans. This makes sense: Ten years ago bed bugs were not a very common issue in the United States. However, the removal of various pesticides from the market once used to kill them has opened up the bed bugs to begin thriving in our sheets once again.

The new insurance is sure to be popular among hotel owners, who currently can pay up to $800 per room for bed bug eradication. However, the insurance currently does not look to be cost effective for homeowners, with the lowest registered annual premium in the $3,000 range. In the future, though, residential policies may become an affordable addition to your home, enabling you to keep bed bugs out of your home year after year.
