Cockroaches as Escape Artists

Thursday, 25th February 2010

Many people have felt the frustration of trying to kill a cockroach. ABC Science explains why people are often unsuccessful at cockroach control. According to the publication, homeowners who try to handle this form of pest control on their own will have a problem because cockroaches are skilled escape artists.

ABC Science reports cockroaches can sense the air currents created when someone moves their foot or hand. These pests have two organs that sense wind. They use the organs to detect wind created by a potential threat. This is how they are able to react so quickly.

When the organs notice wind, they send a signal to the back legs. As soon as the signal is received, the cockroach begins to run. Bypassing the brain saves a great deal of time for cockroaches. If the signal went to the brain instead of the back legs, humans would have a much better chance of catching these pests.

Advanced pest control measures should be taken when dealing with these bugs. Simply chasing after cockroaches will not eliminate an infestation.
