Cleaning Up Rodents and Nests

Friday, 22nd January 2010

If you have a rodent nest or a dead rodent in your home, you must properly clean the area. The CDC outlines the proper process of cleaning up after rodents and stresses the importance of following protocol.

According to the CDC, the first step in removing dead rodents or rodent nests is disinfecting the area. A disinfectant, or a mixture of bleach and water, must be sprayed on the rodent or nest.

The rodent or nest must be soaked in the solution for at least five minutes. After the time has passed, the homeowner can remove the nest or rodent.

Upon cleanup, the rodent or nest must be placed in a plastic bag and the bag must be sealed tightly. Then, the rodent or nest must be placed in a second bag, and that bag must be sealed.

The CDC cautions that people must wash their hands thoroughly after removing a rodent and its nest. Failure to properly dispose of and clean up after the rodent can lead to the spread of diseases.

In addition to proper cleanup, those who have an infestation need to take pest control measures to eliminate the rodents. An outbreak can be dangerous so the proper steps must be taken to remove the rodents from the home.
