Brown Recluse

Wednesday, 6th January 2010

The cold winter months send some pests into hibernation, but have the opposite effect on the brown recluse spider. According to the National Pest Management Association, the brown recluse spider is more active during the winter months, as it seeks shelter from the elements. Because of the increased activity, the association warns of the danger of these spiders.

The Illinois Department of Public Health states that while brown recluse bites are uncommon, the bites can be incredibly dangerous. Around 10 percent of brown recluse bites are considered severe and can result in disfiguring injuries.

The Department of Public Health goes onto say it is important for homeowners to prevent bites. Pest control is an essential part of the process, as is keeping a clean home that is well sealed. In addition, homeowners should pay special attention to crevices where the spiders can hide.

During the winter months, homeowners must be vigilant against the brown recluse. Prevention and protection are necessary when dealing with the dangerous spider.
