Bed Bugs: Making the Commute to the Office

Wednesday, 19th January 2011

Due to their name, bed bugs are most often associated with beds. However, these creatures have been popping up in office buildings as well. According to Human Resource Executive Online, bed bugs are becoming increasingly common in schools, police departments and movie theaters, as well as other businesses that require a large amount of travel.

According to the news site, sitting in an office with the door closed will not protect workers from bed bugs. That is because these pests can detect the carbon dioxide that humans emit. Once they detect the gas, they go through electrical outlets in order to enter the room. Then, they feed off the room’s occupants.

Once bed bugs are in an office building, it is the employer’s duty to contact a pest control professional to take care of the problem. Employers are tasked with providing a safe and healthy work environment, which means they have to provide their employees with a building that is free of bed bugs and other pests. However, employees also need to admit when they have a problem at home – before the bed bugs reach the office! Taking action against bed bugs now means possibly avoiding an infestation later.
