Bats Create Problems for Homeowners

Wednesday, 13th January 2010

Homeowners are at a greater risk in the winter months of receiving a visit from a bat or other wildlife, according to the National Pest Management Association.  The Association states there is a need for awareness of this possibility, as bats carry a large number of diseases that can be passed onto humans.

While the extent of some of the diseases in bats has been exaggerated, bats still pose a serious threat to humans.  The Illinois Department of Health lists rabies and histoplasmosis as the two biggest concerns in regards to bats.

While rabies is transmitted through a bite, histoplasmosis can be transmitted through bat droppings. The Illinois Department of Health goes on to say the occurrence of these diseases is low, but people still must take precautions.

Proper pest control measures should be taken when a bat is in the home.  Professional handling of the bat is needed to protect occupants from the bat.
