Bats as a Mosquito Solution

Tuesday, 1st June 2010

Mosquito bites are itchy, uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. Mosquitoes carry a variety of diseases, which is why people try so hard to keep the pests out of their homes. According to the Newark Advocate, people can use bats as a weapon against mosquitoes.

The news source states bats eat around 3,000 insects a night. If you want to invite bats onto your property so they will feed on some of your mosquitoes, there are a few things you will need to do. Bats need water, so have a water source on your property. You can have a stream, pond or birdbath. In addition, you will need some night blooming flowers and light in your yard. The flowers and light will attract insects in the nighttime hours. When the insects come along, the bats will not be too far behind.

Bats also need shelter, so consider adding some bat houses to your yard. Bats will come to the houses to rest up in between meals.

If you do choose to attract bats to fight against mosquitoes, remember that bats do have their own issues. Bats carry disease, but they are not very likely to bite. As always, though, use caution when dealing with any rodents, and contact a pest control professional if you need additional assistance.
