Hantavirus is carried by wild rodents, including rats and mice. Homeowners can get the virus during spring cleaning by being exposed to dust or dirt contaminated by mice or rat waste. In addition, the virus can be caught through bites.

Thus, if people are cleaning sheds, attics or other areas that are closed up in the winter months, they must do a thorough inspection before cleaning. After the inspection, they should use pest control methods in order to eliminate any live rodents, and then, the area should be ventilated. Then, all rodent droppings should be sprayed with bleach and water. After all of the droppings have been properly taken care of, the homeowner can begin to clean the area.

These precautions must be taken so homeowners do not catch Hantavirus. Hantavirus can be deadly, and thus it is essential for people to protect themselves while conducting spring cleaning.
