Asthma and Pests

A link between asthma and certain pests have been reported.  According to the EPA, the droppings, as well as the body parts, of cockroaches and other pests can lead to an asthmatic reaction in some people.

The EPA came to this conclusion after vast research on the tropic.   Researchers such as Dr. Larry Williams of Duke University have studied the link between cockroaches and asthma.  Williams spent ten years researching the topic and now hopes to educate those with cockroach infestations on the importance of eliminating roaches from the home.

Other researchers, such as Patricia Hynes, a professor of environmental health in the School of Public Health, have noticed an alarming amount of children from low-income families have cockroach related asthma.  In fact, Hynes research found that 30 percent of children in Boston’s public housing are afflicted with asthma.

The research from all parties has shown the most important step for homeowners to take is the removal of the cockroaches, followed by a cleanup of the home and infested areas.  The reduced exposure will lessen the asthma reactions in those who are afflicted.  With the proper pest control in place, children will be less likely to experience the symptoms of asthma.
