Fox Control

Foxes are considered a member of the dog family. Interestingly, they have both canine and feline characteristics in both appearance and activity.  Like cats, foxes play with their food before killing it and are excellent tree climbers.

Identifying a fox

Though there are four species of fox, the red and gray fox are the most predominant in North America.

Both species are characterized by their dog-like appearance. They have an elongated muzzle, large pointed ears, which are usually raised and forward. Foxes are typically smaller in size than domestic dogs and have a dense, fluffy tails.

Although red and gray foxes are very similar, there are features that set them apart:
  • The red fox- fur is red or light orange, with lighter colored under fur. The underbelly is white and its tail is white tipped.
  • The gray fox- smaller than the red fox, its fur is gray or salt-and-pepper in color. Some areas on its body, such as, the neck, back of the ears, legs and feet are highlighted by a rusty yellow color. Its tail is black-tipped.

Damage

Foxes are known to cause costly damage for poultry producers and livestock. Although, foxes usually prey on rodents and animals smaller than rabbits, they will take advantage of opportunities to feed on poultry and other livestock such as pigs, and lambs, when their ideal menu items are not readily available.

In addition, foxes may carry contagious diseases such as rabies and parasites. Toxocariasis is commonly associated with foxes. This parasitic disease and can be transmitted to both humans and pets.

Habitat

Considering their ability to adapt well to most environments, foxes inhabit most of North America. The red fox prefers areas of open country and cornfields, while the gray fox can be found in heavily wooded swamps, grasslands and rough terrain near streams and lakes, mountainous regions and other areas of dense covering.
