Integrated Pest Management
Have you heard the News?
Integrated Pest Management or IPM may be defined as using all the tools in the tool box. IPM is combining a thorough inspection, identification, proper exclusion techniques and choosing the appropriate product or material to reduce and / or eliminate pest problems within your facility.
This is achieved by these steps:
- Cultural: Inspection and monitoring, and sanitation recommendations.
- Mechanical: The use of glue, pheromone, snap, light, bait, catch-all and mechanical wind-up traps.
- Biological: The use of canine inspecting dogs, natural / environmentally responsible solutions for pest problems.
a. A canine inspection for bedbugs – the trained canine has a 90%+ accuracy (better sense of smell, hearing and sometimes sight) where the average person is only 40%.
b. Botanical products may be used for treating facilities – they are completely organic reducing reactions by chemically sensitive individuals.
c. Growth Regulators – (IGR’s) products that prevent insects from reproducing.
- Equipment / Materials: The use of state of the art equipment allowing for targeted penetration into pest harborage areas
- Physical / Environmental: Modification of the structure to reduce the conducive conditions for pests to multiply. For example, gutter cleaning, exclusion - reducing entryways for pest using caulk, stuff-it, or foam. Power washing floors to remove built up debris attracting insects. Noise equipment will discourages certain pests from your environment. Create an “open zone” around the structure- Cutting tall grass, placing a 3’ band of gravel, or mulch around foundation, reducing pest harborage areas.
- Trapping: Setting live catch traps for raccoon, birds, bats, and opossums and other wildlife.
