Prepare for Stink Bugs

It’s official: The invasion of stink bugs is underway. Every year around the same time these bugs start to invade the weak spots of your home and release their stench all over your property. Unless you practice proper prevention strategies, you will find your home swarmed with these annoying, reeking insects.

How Do They Get In?
Stink bugs travel and breed outside all throughout the summer months, but when it starts to get colder these bugs invade your home. While a few may find their way inside by clinging to your clothes, most crawl in through other spots in and around your home. For instance:

  • Openings in windows
  • Cracks in door frames
  • Doggy (or kitty) doors

    • Any small opening represents a potential place for insects to enter your home, making it difficult to keep the pests outside. To make matters worse, pesticides have little effect on stink bugs. Though there is no surefire way to remove stinkbugs from your home, you can utilize structural exclusion methods to reduce their numbers around your property.

    Stink Bugs Uncommon Scents…

    When you encounter a stink bug, this much you can be sure of: there’s more to come. In case you are not sure what it is you are seeing, here are some tips on identifying the stink bug:

    • The stink bug has two sets of wings and vaguely resembles a beetle.
    • They usually are dull gray or brown, but some are such colors as black (often with red or orange markings), green, or blue.

    Stink bug invasions are most common in the late summer and early fall. They are attracted to light and will find their way into homes when porch and deck lights are on and doors are opened and closed. So how do you get rid of them? Many pest control companies will tell you that it is possible to eradicate infestations from your home completely. However, this is not true.
